The Tees Valley has a strong tradition of independent publishing. In this section of the site you can find information on small and independent publishers operating at the moment. Most of the publishers have their own sites which their profiles link to where you can browse and buy books and find out about their submission guidelines.

 

Arrowhead Press

Arrowhead Press publishes books and pamphlets of contemporary poetry. Its main aim is to provide a platform for poets to cross the difficult gap between magazine publication and first pamphlet or full collection.

Ek Zuban

Ek Zuban is an independent press based in Tees Valley that focuses on publishing poetry in bi-lingual editions as a means of expanding the cultural vistas of Teesside and raising the profile of North East writers on the international stage. Ek Zuban also occassionally publishes anthologies of new poetry, the radical graphic illustrated magazine KENAZ, and some books on social history from the Tees valley area.

Mudfog Press

Mudfog Press works to promote new writers and writing from the Tees Valley and surrounding area. The Press is run by a voluntary editorial board and is non-profit-making. It currently has financial support from Middlesbrough Council and Arts Council England. The Press mostly publishes poetry and short fiction and puts particular emphasis on the production of short pamphlets, which give writers a first opportunity of individual publication. Mudfog offers strong editorial support for its authors.

Smokestack Books

Smokestack champions poets who are unfashionable, radical, left-field and working a long way from the metropolitan centres of cultural authority. Smokestack is interested in the World as well as the Word; believes that poetry is a part of and not apart from society; argues that if poetry does not belong to everyone it is not poetry.

Vane Women Press

Vane Women Press was launched in 1993 as the publishing arm of the Vane Women performing and writing collective. It is a small press committed to bringing out the work of women writers in the North East. The collective takes its name from Darlington Arts Centre's address at Vane Terrace - their base camp.
